The top ten students from each grade level (fourth and fifth) have been determined. These ten will be tutored after school on Monday, December 7 (fourth grade) and Tuesday, December 8 (fifth grade) and retested on December 9 to determine our 2010 team (five students from each grade).
If any of the testing days conflict with the fifth grade gifted schedule, we will make adjustments.
Beginning on January 11 and 12, weekly after school tutoring will begin for fourth and fifth graders respectively.

Our team (yet to be formed) has been invited to compete in the annual competition at SBU in Bolivar, Missouri. The date for this important event is Saturday, January 30. As we gear the team up for the year, members need to keep this date clear. Our preliminary testing will be in November.

With changes in our school times and teacher responsibilities, this year, our weekly tutoring days will be different. We are looking at a possibility of tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, and yet we will be required to build in some flexibility with that schedule. As we know more, we will post more information for those of you who are interested.

We were proud to be in attendance when four of our team members earned ribbons at the Carl Junction contest. Photos of the event have been posted.
WILLIE double ribboned with 10th place earnings in both Concepts and Problem Solving for the 5th grade. ELIJAH also doubled up with 8th place in Problem Solving and 7th place in Concepts for 5th grade. CHLOE took home the ribbon for 7th place in Problem Solving for 5th grade.
In the fourth grade, ALEXANDRA pulled out a 6th place score in Problem Solving.
Thank you to Mr. Palmersheim and Mrs. Edman who each attended the awards assembly to lend their support to our team.
We can also take part of the credit for some of the 6th graders at Memorial Middle School who scored well. In fact, Mr. Obert’s middle school students from South and Memorial took the top eight places in Concepts and half of the top eight placed in Problem Solving. Students that came through at least one year of coaching with Mr. Culbertson and Mr. Hoggatt include SAMANTHA (8th place, Concepts), GARRETT (6th place, Concepts; 2nd place, Problem Solving), and MICHAEL (1st place, Concepts). GARRETT and MICHAEL will continue their Mathematical journey at the state level, next month.
This year, we have built a foundation for next year’s team. While we are hopeful for some big wins next year, we are really proud of the caliber of student we have served in 2009. We hit some bumps in the road, but we are very pleased in the perseverance of our teams.

The Bolivar contest is a tough one, but we are proud to announce some winners from Cecil Floyd. RYLEE pulled out a 10th place in Problem Solving for the third grade team. KINSLEY and LAUREN were the stars for the fourth grade, tying for eight place in Problem Solving, and scoring seventh and ninth, respectively, in Math Concepts. In fifth grade ELIJAH scored fifth place in Problem Solving.
The contest, held at Southwest Baptist University, was attended by 363 participants from 29 schools.
We were also proud of some former Cecil Floydians who brought prizes home. Our bus ride, shared with students from Columbia, and the three middle schools was enjoyable.
The coaches are especially pleased that the team achieved such high marks in Problem Solving. This test, traditionally, is more difficult than the Concepts test. We hope to achieve even greater scores when we compete in Carl Junction on March 28.
Check out some photos of our day (updated February 2, 2009)!

The PTO at Cecil Floyd continues to bless the Math League with its support. They write the checks that allow us to enter both of our annual competitions. They also feed us breakfast at McDonald’s in Mount Vernon on the way to Bolivar. Without their support, students would have to pay for these items directly. Please tell the PTO that you appreciate their support!
